This project takes shape in the center of the village, in a place already known for its laundry services. A hall, which was previously non-existent, was built into the pre-existing space. The main idea is to separate the working and storage area, where employees spend most of their time, from the private area, and the entrance hall, the public space where customers are welcomed.

Renovation of a Functionalist Villa “Indian Ship” / Idhea

January 1, 2019 Rayen Sagredo 0

The villa was built in 1936 according to the design of a noted Czech architect Vladimír Grégr, grandson of a well-known journalist and politician. Built in functionalist style, the villa has significant rustic elements including conical exterior walls, rough dragged work and wooden casing. In the framework of maximum respect to the original character of the house, the modifications include removal of the accumulation of insensitive silt of the 80s, highlighting the unique spaces and architectural details, and adaptation to modern living standards.

Bar da Laje / OYAPOCK architectes

This music venue, bar, and restaurant in Rio, at the Favela do Vidigal, one of the postcards of the city is a founding project for our architecture office and an atypical project for more than one reason. Perched at the summit of the favela, the project was confronted with difficult access as a construction site but benefitted from incredible views over Rio. This extension-renovation of the existing building made us rethink the traditional role played by architects. Actually, the project was built through the coordination between different players: the client and his economic restraints – the revenues of the venue allowed him to gradually continue the renovation, therefore, we were confronted with an unstable budget and a work developed in several short-duration phases – and the local favela companies that brought both their know-how and the limited array of materials we could employ that were easily found within the community.

Pergola in Luotuowan Village / LUO studio

Wood waste remained from demolition and construction
Located at Longquanguan Town, Fuping County, Hebei, Luotuowan Village borders Shanxi Province, at the foot of the north side of Taihang Mountains. Surrounding mountains resulted in poor transportation to the village, which held back the village’s economic development and caused an increasing number of dilapidated houses. In recent years, however, the local government has allocated plenty of financial and material resources to renovate and construct houses in the village and help it shake off poverty. After unremitting efforts, quality of villagers’ life has been gradually improved. Before the renovation, villagers were allowed to choose a traditional wooden roof or roof made of cast-in-situ concrete for the house. The latter solution was more preferred because it was easier to implement and most of residents here were middle-aged and elderly people. During the village revamping process, a large number of wooden beams and rafters were dismantled and left over. Previously, the wood waste had been used to make a fire for heating and cooking. But in these days, due to the call for ecological environment protection and forest fire prevention as well as the fact that air source heat pumps and gas equipment for cooking were introduced into the village, the dismantled woods of various sizes were left unused.

This renovation project is used to be an abandon 30 years-old townhouse where existing elements are run-down. Existing wall which were used to define previous house function are no longer match a new requirement of a small family’s single bedroom unit. Furthermore, collapsed roof and staircase led to a decision to remodel the existing element while keeping only existing structural framework.

Autodesk’s new Portland office deserved an identity as compelling as its location—the Towne Storage building, a renovated historic warehouse at the Burnside Bridgehead. Working closely with Autodesk and the brand strategists at Think Joule, Mackenzie’s design team interpreted the Autodesk brand through the lens of local context. The workplace is designed to attract and retain talent through carefully thought-out amenity space that fosters engagement, interaction, and an authentic collective identity.

La Moderna / SKETCH

December 28, 2018 Daniel Tapia 0

La Moderna is a mixed-use building built in 1962 on one of the main avenues of the Old Town of Panama City. The building has a modernist influence that is marked in the design of its original façade, in the way it is implanted in the ground, as well as in the logic of the existing structure. In 2014, at the beginning of the design process, the interiors and the structure of the building were seriously deteriorated and with moisture problems in their upper levels due to faults in their waterproofing.

The complex of the former waterworks on Letná has undergone several conversions since it was constructed in the second half of the 19th century but only the water tower has been preserved in its original form. The technical buildings, including the steam machine engine room, were demolished and replaced with multi-story annexes. In recent decades the complex has been used as a youth centre and will retain this function once it has been renovated.

MH Creative relocates the new office to the old factory of “YUAN HE TANG”, a China Time-honored Brand in Quanzhou. When visitors come to the scene for the first time, they linger on the vicissitudes over years. Water traces are mottled on the walls. Light spots, projected by the round holes of the canopy, play hide-and-seek between the beams and columns. In an instant, an impulse is triggered so as to wake up the sleeping spatial memory, inject new vitality, and let it continue and grow.

Office Renovation / NI&Co. Architects

The smallest unit constituting society
This is a renovation project of an office own by two persons. In this space two people share their time, can be considered to be the smallest spatial unit in society.  We created a unit space filled with many options. The office is a small space of 28 square meters, segmented, creating a number of different situations. If that is the case, while having a personality where there is a place, we aim at the state related to separation. We expanded the small place and the whole, and also made the appropriate balance.
